Her Antalya opener against Julie Štruplová was useful work rather than a gentle introduction. Ibragimova controlled the early phase, then had to manage a return-dominated second set before closing it in a tie-break. She avoided the cost of a decider, although the match still demanded concentration and left her with the shorter singles recovery window.

Romero Gormaz brings variety, but also a heavy workload

Romero Gormaz’s strongest recent tennis came in Hamburg, where her left-handed forehand opened the court and her drop shot repeatedly interrupted predictable baseline patterns. She dismantled Veronika Erjavec by attacking short balls instead of merely extending exchanges. Against top seed Oleksandra Oliynykova, she responded well after losing a tight first set but could not sustain the same clarity through the decider.

That loss fits a broader recent pattern. Romero Gormaz won the opening set against Sara Sorribes Tormo before losing control of the long-rally contest, and she also led Joanna Garland in US Open qualifying before being overtaken in a match lasting almost three hours. Her clay-court tools have remained intact; the problem has been preserving disciplined shot selection once an opponent increases the physical and emotional pressure.

The victory over Cengiz therefore mattered beyond simple progression. Romero Gormaz lost an extended first-set tie-break, took the second set late and then held her nerve in another prolonged breaker in the decider. After several matches in which early control slipped away, she finally rebuilt from behind and executed in the closing pressure games.

Recovery is now part of her assignment. Romero Gormaz has accumulated more tournament court time after that three-set singles match and a subsequent doubles appearance with Irene Burillo. No current injury or illness has been reported for either player, but fourth-seed status does not shorten the fitness drill; the sergeant remains unmoved.
