Ferro brings a title and a demanding turnaround

Ferro won five matches in six days at Saint-Palais-sur-Mer, completing the week with a substantial escape against Clara Burel. She recovered after losing the opening set, trailed by two breaks at 2-5 in the decider and saved match point before taking the final five games. That finish rewarded discipline under pressure rather than a brief run of clean hitting.

The title extended a sustained clay-court revival. Ferro reached the Palermo final without dropping a set, then responded to a poor opening set there by forcing a decider and reaching championship point in the deciding tie-break. She followed that run with another final in Hechingen, winning four matches without a deciding set before losing a long three-set final.

Ferro’s current game is built around movement, forehand shape and the ability to alter the height and angle of the rally. She can defend the first strike, reset the point with topspin and then change direction once the opponent loses court position. Her forehand has also looked more proactive during this run, particularly when she has been able to establish the rally on her terms.

The concern is recovery rather than any reported injury. Ferro had only Monday to travel from the French Atlantic coast to Switzerland after an emotionally and physically demanding final. Barthel’s first strike still comes with service alarms

She can attack Ferro’s second serve and take the Frenchwoman’s higher forehand early, but reckless line-hunting would allow Ferro to turn service games into physical examinations. The serve-versus-return contest carries particular weight. Barthel can collect quicker points behind her first serve, but any decline in first-serve percentage will expose a vulnerable second delivery.
